Crazy For Kdrama Podcast Episode 22: Cozy, Cozy Kdrama

1 Apr

We had some fun this episode — or at least we laughed a lot. Although, how that’s different from any other episode? I’m not really sure.

Show Notes
In this episode we do lots of stuff, so just listen. Just kidding! After chatting about news, what we’re watching, and how Roommate has been letting us down of late, we answer Kdrama-related questions, which have us coming almost to blows over the epic question “Super Junior or Big Bang?” and wondering which Kdrama heroine we would most want to be. Then we move over to talking about comfort watches, dramas that are our go to’s if we are sick or just want to be cheered up.

What A Difference A Teaser Makes: Superdaddy Yeol

7 Mar

super daddy yeolAwww…it’s my first post shut down teaser entry. And in the spirit of the teaser post, I’d like to say it made me either really want to watch the show or turn me away forever–but I’m left with exactly what I came in with a big case of the ‘eh’s’.

To be honest, I don’t actually want to watch the show. The premise, woman dying of some sort of illness looking for a new family for her daughter, convinces her sad sack slacker ex-boyfriend to marry her. Why is this not my cup of tea? I’m not a huge fan of the slacker sad sack heroes and, it’s the dying thing. Maybe the show will surprise us and they will fall in love (of course they will) and then–she’ll surprise live! But you know what, people? I’ve fallen for that hope before. Sitting in on an entire drama thinking, no, she won’t actually die in the end, and then yep, you guessed it–she dies in the end. So I will not be fooled again. Do you hear me kdrama? I shall not be fooled by your chicanery again! Continue reading

What A Difference A Couple of Hours Make

9 Oct

Earlier today, I saw the news that Lee Dong Gun was considering starring in a new tvN drama and I literally squeeed out loud. I really like Lee Dong Gun and was just the other day thinking about him, hoping that he hasn’t given up on acting and will be picking up a new drama soon.

Then there it was, an answer to my K-prayers. Not only had he been offered a new drama and was considering it, but it was also for the leading role! I could hardly contain my happiness and was determined to write a post celebrating after getting back from the gym.

As I settled down at my computer, that’s when I saw it. The news that he’d turned down the part. What the?? NOoooo!

Casting Rumor: Mi-rae’s Choice

14 Aug
miraes choicePlease let this casting rumor be true. My birthday isn’t that far away–lets consider it a birthday present from the Gods of Kdrama. I know I don’t usually like to depend on people ‘looking favorable on’ casting news, but this time I just can’t help myself. The news currently buzzing around is that Lee Dong-gun may finally be coming back to drama-land. Who is this you ask? And why should you care?
Well, you don’t have to care, but for some reason, I do. The only thing I’ve seen Lee Dong-gun in was his last work, When It’s At Night, which he was great in, and since then (and after Googling his sad personal history) I’ve had a soft spot in my Kdrama loving heart for him.

Do’s and Dont’s: Anatomy of a Good K-Kiss

24 May

Rewatching Flower Boy Ramyun Shop has made me think about exactly what goes into a really good, memorable Kdrama kiss. No, not all kisses need to be searching for ones tonsils to be hot–this is Kdrama not HBO. However, for writers out there, here a few Do’s and Don’ts on how to make your kisses memorable.

Do: Be On Cable
Cable channels seem to be a little less restrictive and a little more handsy. In turn their kisses are more realistic and hotter. Examples: Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, I Need Romance 2012, Nine.

Top 5 Most Rewatched Shows

9 Oct

Be it a rainy day, or a blue mood, or just a genuine love of drama, we all have shows we go back to again and again. For us these shows may be cozy, heartwarming, or just a pick me up. We don’t necessarily have to rewatch the show from start to finish, we watch favorite parts, favorite scenes, or heck we may even just highlight reel the whole series. I personally also use these dramas when I want to watch Kdrama but don’t have time and don’t want to take the chance to get sucked into a new show. You know, because once a show has me in its clutches, I’m there until the end.

Again, like the list of Cracktastic Kdramas, these may not even be the best shows, they may not even show up on my top 5 or even top 10 list of favorite dramas. But when the urge to rewatch comes upon me, there they are, waiting.

Showus interuptus–Shows I couldn’t finish

30 May

So my admission of my terrible habit of cheating last week brought up the subject of abandoned shows. Usually my rule for Kdrama is 3 episodes. I’m not allowed to make a judgment until at least 3 episodes in. This gets me past the dreaded First Episode Syndrome, where I don’t know why; I just don’t care for the first episodes of a lot of shows. I shudder to think how many good shows would I have missed out on if I had abandoned it after the first episode as I originally wanted. Off the top of my head we’ve got Stars Falling From The Sky, Coffee Prince, Greatest Love, and Can You Hear My Heart (the list is actually pretty long.)

I think 3 episodes is a good number to aim for when trying to settle on a show. It’s long enough to get the introductions and a lot of the set up out of the way. The writers have settled down from the “gotta grab viewers attentions” frenzy of the beginning. With 3 episodes you’ve got enough hours under your belt to properly make a judgment on the decision to stick with or abandon a series. If I hit 3 episodes and give it up, I refuse to feel guilty about it. The show had its chance and squandered it. My Kdrama viewing time is very valuable here people!

So here’s a quick rundown of shows I’ve abandoned like a shoe on the side of a road.

Gave up after 3 episodes

9 end 2 out
9 End 2 Outs: I kept waiting to like this one. I kept saying just one more episode, but then I realized I actively didn’t like any of the characters, there seemed to be no plot, and I was antsy to try something new. Continue reading

Valentines Special: Top 5 Favorite Couples

14 Feb

Okay, I had a post scheduled for today but I think this might be a little more fun considering today’s holiday.

I was going to hold off on doing some of these top five lists until I had seen more shows, but couldn’t resist. Putting together my list was harder than I expected. I love a lot of couples for many reasons. At the end of almost every series I sigh over every shared look, get weepy over every declaration, and fervently know those two people will be together forever.

So here are my highlights. Please keep in mind the list I was working from if you’re own personal favorites are missing from my list. My guess? This will have to be a list we’ll revisit again.
