Crazy For Kdrama Podcast Episode 20: Roommate, Remakes, and the End of Kdrama?

4 Mar

It’s the twentieth episode! Let’s party like it’s Episode One — you know, except for the fact that we were horribly nervous Episode One and now we are a slick podcast-making machine! Well, maybe not, but we still have fun.

Show Notes
For this episode, we talk about Junsu (Yes again! What can we say, his MV was released, and it is epic — how could we resist?), we squee about Stephanie’s newfound love of Roommate (well, we both squee, and Cherry rocks the ‘I told you so’), we answer a listener question regarding the sister to the sequel and spin off, the remake, then finally, we discuss the troubling news from the big three kdrama broadcasters and what that means for the future of Kdrama. Crazy For Kdrama Podcast Episode 18: Kdrama’s Sequels and Spinoffs

Episode 18 is up! Not only is it up, but due to internet issues, we don’t run as long as we usually do — great news for those of you who think we talk to much — and for those of you who like our length — don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll be back to normal next time.

The Next Product To Be Placed?

6 Sep

Screenshot 2013-09-06 at 8.39.08 AMInteresting side note. I noticed a news article this week which talked about Samsung unveiling its new watch phone, the “Galaxy Gear Smartwatch”. The idea strikes me as funny, but really, when I think about it, its a pretty handy idea. I already use my phone as a watch so why not?

How does this relate to Kdrama? Well, my first thought when I saw the news? I wonder how long its going to be before one of these watches show up in a kdrama? We all know that Kdrama always features the newest and brightest in phones. Come on–how many of you watched a Kdrama and thought–damn I want that phone? I know it’s not just me.

Soundtrack Sunday! Flower Boy Ramyun Shop

26 May

soundtrack sunday

Flower Boy Ramyun Shop had some pretty decent music to it. Nothing that as soon as I listened to it made me want to run out, find out who it was, and buy it instantly (like I did with I Need Romance 2012 the other weekend). But it wasn’t all incessant cringing ballads either. Which is nice.

First up surprised me. I liked this song and when I Youtubed to find songs for this post I fell over when I realized it was actually Jung Il Woo singing. Um. Hello awesome. He has just ticked up several more points in my esteem. Continue reading

Do’s and Dont’s: Anatomy of a Good K-Kiss

24 May

Rewatching Flower Boy Ramyun Shop has made me think about exactly what goes into a really good, memorable Kdrama kiss. No, not all kisses need to be searching for ones tonsils to be hot–this is Kdrama not HBO. However, for writers out there, here a few Do’s and Don’ts on how to make your kisses memorable.

Do: Be On Cable
Cable channels seem to be a little less restrictive and a little more handsy. In turn their kisses are more realistic and hotter. Examples: Flower Boy Ramyun Shop, I Need Romance 2012, Nine.

Top 5 Favorite Kdramas

14 Oct

So usually when I’m talking about my favorite Kdramas, I talk my top 3. I don’t know why I never really think about putting together a list with any more than that. It’s just easier to know exactly what my top 3 are, no wiggle room, no second guessing. In the entire time I’ve been doing the blog, My top 3 has only changed once.

Since this is my last Top 5 List of my anniversary week, I wondered if it was a little trite to do my top 5 favorite Kdramas. I did my Top 5 Cracktastick Shows and my Top 5 Most Rewatched Shows which seemed similar. However, looking at my list, neither cracktastic nor rewatched means favorite. And not all my top shows showed up on the other lists. Interesting…(well, to me at least)

We all have shows we like, we all have shows which stick with us for some reason or another, but ab-stastic favorites? That’s a much smaller list. Favorite shows may be good, they may be guilty pleasures, or they may be shows that lots of other people don’t like. But you know what? We don’t care. For some reason, something within this drama has touched us and, well, isn’t that why we watch Kdrama?

Now if you’re a regular reader of the blog you probably know my favorite Kdramas are shows which don’t really rank high on others lists. I’m a sucker for character driven shows. Give me some good characters with crunchy layers and toss in a good romance, I’m in. If people say the show is boring with no plot? Yep, it’s the show for me!
You know how I judge if a show is going to be situating itself as a favorite? When I thought about it, it’s actually pretty easy. In a really good drama, when I’m watching it, if I find myself wanting to watch it all over again, when I haven’t even finished it? Favorite.

Top 5 Most Rewatched Shows

9 Oct

Be it a rainy day, or a blue mood, or just a genuine love of drama, we all have shows we go back to again and again. For us these shows may be cozy, heartwarming, or just a pick me up. We don’t necessarily have to rewatch the show from start to finish, we watch favorite parts, favorite scenes, or heck we may even just highlight reel the whole series. I personally also use these dramas when I want to watch Kdrama but don’t have time and don’t want to take the chance to get sucked into a new show. You know, because once a show has me in its clutches, I’m there until the end.

Again, like the list of Cracktastic Kdramas, these may not even be the best shows, they may not even show up on my top 5 or even top 10 list of favorite dramas. But when the urge to rewatch comes upon me, there they are, waiting.

Top 5 Cracktastic Kdramas

8 Oct

all nighterWe’ve all had these shows haven’t we? Those shows, where you just NEED to know what happens? Those shows which make you play the “Just one more episode game” until you look outside the window and realize the sky is turning light? When coworkers may think that you’re working diligently but really your mind is on the latest wrench the Big Bad Kdrama Mama has thrown at your couple?

Yeah, that’s the sort of shows I’m talking about. These shows, good or bad, for some reason capture our attention and just won’t let go. When you’re watching these shows, time will just fly by and you’ll look up realizing you haven’t eaten in 8 hours. During these shows, there is usually a great deal laughing, crying, or general shouting at the screen. And at the end of the episode? There is either the mad scramble for the remote or the legendary bathroom sprint (because, heaven forbid I go while the show is on, or take the extra minute that it would take to walk up stairs rather than climb them at a dead run).
Or is that just me? Yeah. It could totally be me. Continue reading
