Crazy For Kdrama Podcast Episode 23: Kdrama, Not Korean Soap Operas

15 Apr

We had a couple of issues this episode 1) our terrible moods and 2) some technical issues which made Cherry sound like a robot for a while. (If you’re wondering, no, this did not help the moods.) On the upside? We got a wee bit ranty — which is always fun.

Show Notes
In this episode we put our ranty hats on and talk about how delightful we think it is when people call Kdramas “Korean soap operas,” and if they can say it while rolling their eyes? Even better! (This is a lie, neither of these things are good.) We talk about what we’re watching and Stephanie lays a big surprise on Cherry Cordial, add on some newsy type stuff and a listener-question-inspired topic about the changes of Kdrama through history which we “Uhhh…” our way through, and you have the perfect recipe for an interesting podcast.

Ghost-Seeing Detective Cheo Yong Review (SPOILERS)

29 Mar

ghost seeing detective cheo yongAs Ghost-Seeing Detective Cheo Yong is a cable drama and thereby supposedly  superior in quality and short in episodes, it was an easy fit into last years Cramming In Kdrama. Unfortunately, while it was indeed short in episodes and had a hero who was so beautiful it was distracting it was unfortunately, not superior in quality.

So why, months later, am I choosing to throw it in front of all the other dramas I’m supposed to review? News came down the kdrama pipeline that they are making a season two. My thoughts? What the freaking fudge? COME ON. Out of all the dramas you had last year, including the killer Bad Guys you choose this piece of badly written poo to do a second season?

Okay, that was overly dramatic. The drama isn’t a pile of poo.

What A Difference A Teaser Make: Healer

22 Nov

Scrolling through my Instagram feed there he is again, Ji Chang Wook.

진짜 얼마안남있다!! #힐러 #둑흔둑흔 #떨림 #진짜 #진짜!!

A photo posted by 지창욱 (@jichangwook) on Nov 18, 2014 at 1:50am PST

He is, of course, smiling, which is good as that’s ow I like him  best. But sadly, seeing his smiling face always makes me a little blue. While I loved him in Smile Dong Hae, he has yet to be in another drama I wanted to sit through.

Well–except for Bachelors Vegetable Store. I sat through that entire pile of poo for him (and of course the other bachelors) the only reason I forgive him for those wasted hours is the fact that his part of the drama was almost really good. He can not be held responsible for the the depths of maudlin suckitude the other plots fell.

(If you didn’t catch that–don’t watch Bachelors Vegetable Store–friends don’t let friends watch bad kdramas.)

So back to his Instagram. Currently all his photos are of him in costume for his latest drama, Healer. Ho-hum, not another one–please don’t make me dislike you Ji Chang Wook.

I’d read a blurb as to what the drama was going to be about, and of course, I had no interest in it. But that changed when I saw the first official teaser:

Oh my freaking goodness–how awesome does this look?

My furor up, I went hunting for more information on the plot–and he’s not a lawyer who stumbles upon a wrong he has to uncover–he’s like this elite bad-ass messenger.

Wait. A Messenger? That can’t be totally right either, especially considering he has a hacker for a partner. Anyway it is the messenger who stumbles onto the big bad. Why does that one occupation make a difference in my interest level? Lord if I know. I think it may fall under the umbrella of my love for caper movies. Mr Messenger is cocky, quick, and has the ability to move just that side of the law.

The drama (from the teaser at least) looks awesome and something you usually see more in movies than dramas. It also looks like not only is Ji CHang Wook perfect for the role, he looks like he’s having a blast while doing it.

So thanks Ji Chang Wook, thanks for taking one for the team, for finally doing a drama I might actually watch.

Now if you could just have Goo Soo do the same, that’d be great. Thanks!

Crazy for Kdrama Podcast Episode 13: Kpop Wishes and Kdrama Dreams

19 Nov

Thirteen? Is it unlucky thirteen? We certainly hope not! In response to a voicemail, Cherry and I try to disagree more — or maybe that was just me — and just wait until you hear how many dramas I made my way through the last two weeks.

Crazy For Kdrama Podcast Episode 11: Kdrama’s Second Season

22 Oct

Episode 11! I’m trying so hard to make these shorter — it’s possible I’m fighting a losing battle. I literally cut 45 minutes from this episode. What can I say, Cherry and I are chatty, chatty, chatty. I’m so excited to actually be able to contribute something to the ‘what we’re watching’ section — it’s possible the anticipated shame of announcing I hadn’t seen anything made me sit down and watch something. So, yay!

Is There Actually Gold At the End of that Rainbow?

30 Oct

Holy moly! Time in an outside of Kdramalandia is moving so quickly. I can’t believe we’ve already reached the premier date for Golden Rainbow? Wasn’t it just last week I was whining about it?

And it’s premiering on my birthday no less!

While I haven’t decided if I’m going to watch it or not, I have to say, I’m pleased as punch to know I was right about Uee and Jung Il Woo totally looking like an awesome couple together. See?Goldenrainbow

Second-hand Crack

19 Feb

one more

While watching Smile Dong Hae the first time around I was totally hooked. Each episode made me gasp with each ever more ridiculous plot twist, each cliffhanger made me put off food and bathroom breaks for way, way too long. I HAD to find out what happened. It was the exact definition of a crack-tastic kdrama.

However, this time around, I’m finding myself not able to get as into it as I had before. I’m just not as invested, things before which had me saying, “Oh no she didn’t!”, now have me groaning or rolling my eyes. It makes me wonder:

Do these crack shows not hold up after the fervor has gone away?  Continue reading

Top 5 Characters I’d Most Want to Slap

25 Jan

While watching our episodes this week with Operation: Kdrama Chat, we’ve unfortunately reached the episodes where the Evil Wannabe Girlfriend’s storyline becomes more prominent, which unfortunately also means, she gets more airtime. Which makes me cranky as I really, really hate her. Then Laurie said:

Who else would have Bitch slapped wanna be girlfriend, for the insults she was handing out, not just to K but to PJ too? Swear if my fist could reach through the computer to give her weighted bugs bunny smack…. I would have.

I was relieved as, up until that moment, I was afraid I was the only one who sometimes felt the unexplainable urge to reach out and slap a character. So with this knowledge, I realized this was the perfect subject for a Top 5 List.
Now these are not always evil characters. They are not always the villains or Big Bad Kdrama Mamas, those are a definite separate entity and therefore deserve their own list. Nope, these are characters who are so irritating, thick-headed, that the mere sight of them on your screen makes you wish you had the ability to slap the be-jeezus out of these fictional characters.

Top 5 Characters I’d Most Want to Slapstars falling from the sky Continue reading
